The REAL ID Act of 2005 was implemented Aug. 15 at Montgomery Regional Airport Air National Guard Base, Ala., for the continued and improved safety of military members and their families.

Visitors seeking access to Air Force installations using state identification from Minnesota, Missouri, Washington and American Samoa will no longer be authorized access without additional documentation.

This new change aligns the Air Force's installation access policy with requirements of the REAL ID Act, which focuses on improving the reliability of state-issued identification documents, and helps prevent a person's ability to evade detection by using a fraudulent form of ID.

"This policy change helps to take the responsibility off the shoulders of each state as we continue to implement the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government standardize sources of identification," said Tech. Sgt. William Sanders, the day shift flight chief with the 187th Security Forces Squadron here. "When a person arrives requesting access to the installation with a REAL ID credential, we know they meet minimum standards for entry based on the Facility Security Level. We are able to easily identify the person and quickly grant entry to the installation while adding yet another level of security to our installation."

While ID's that do not meet security and data-collection guidelines will not be accepted, alternate forms of identification will be allowed. Some of the more common alternatives include a valid U.S. or foreign government issued passport, an employment authorization document that contains a photograph, or identification cards issued by federal state or local government agencies that include a photo and biographic information.
