Lt. Col. Amy Z. Mundell assumed command of the 187th Medical Group during a ceremony here May 15, 2021.

Col. Douglas D. DeMaio, 187th Fighter Wing commander, presided over the ceremony where Col. Tara D. McKennie relinquished command to Mundell.

“Command is the highest privilege of our profession,” said DeMaio. “A good commander has the trust of both leadership and the unit, knows and mitigates weaknesses and strengths, and is a master of the craft.”

McKennie and Mundell’s prior service has exemplified these qualities of leadership, which will continue to propel the medical group and the wing forward.

Mundell joins the Red Tails from the Kentucky Air National Guard where she served as the Deputy Medical Group Commander and then the Inspector General. She distinguished herself as a team player and problem-solver, which made her the front runner for this command.

“As we accelerate the Red Tail legacy,” said DeMaio, “these are the exact qualities I was looking for to help lead us in the conversion to the F-35, agile combat, and peer competition.”

McKennie will go on to serve as the Chief of Staff of the Alabama Air National Guard at Joint Forces Headquarters, Montgomery, Ala.
